Philadelphia Travel Guide: Celebrating 250 Years of America

Summer 2026 is the perfect time for a trip to Philadelphia. What better place to celebrate the USA’s milestone 250th birthday than the place where it all started? To help you party like it’s 1776, we put together our list of the city’s most essential sights (and bites). Let’s plan your Philly getaway!

American History Icons

Liberty Bell: No trip to Philly is complete without a visit here. The Liberty Bell is a powerful symbol of freedom and seeing it up close brings our nation’s history to life. Right across the street you’ll find Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed.

Betsy Ross House: Head to Old City and step into the story of the woman credited with sewing the first American flag. The house is small but packed with character—and a great reminder of the many people involved in the founding of the United States.

Elfreth’s Alley: Just a short walk away, this is the oldest continuously-inhabited residential street in America. Cobblestones, charming homes, and flower boxes transport you back to the colonial era. (P.S. You might recognize this street from our summer campaign!)

Classic Views & Landmarks

Boathouse Row: Home to some of the oldest rowing clubs in the country, these 19th-century boathouses still serve active rowing teams today. Enjoy a stroll along the Schuylkill River as you discover this unique connection between Philly’s past and present.

LOVE Park: Snap a photo with the iconic LOVE sculpture—touristy, yes, but still a must. It’s also a great place to pause while exploring Center City.

Rocky Steps & Philadelphia Museum of Art: Run (or at least walk) up the famous Rocky Steps and take in the skyline view at the top. Even if you’re not going inside the museum, the experience is pure Philly.

Eat Like a Local

Soft Pretzels: Philly pretzels are softer, chewier, and saltier than anywhere else. Grab one from a street vendor or a neighborhood bakery—this is everyday comfort food in the City of Brotherly Love.

Cheesesteaks: Experience the ultimate Philly rivalry: Pat’s vs. Geno’s. These famous cheesesteak spots are located across the street from each other in South Philly, so you can try both and decide for yourself. Pro tip: Know how to order (“wit” or “witout” onions) and keep it moving.

Water Ice: Balance out those savory bites with a refreshing, icy dessert. This smooth and silky frozen treat came to Philadelphia with Italian immigrants in the late 19th century and has been a summertime staple ever since. Stop by John’s for a scoop (or two).

Cheer on the Home Team

Philadelphia sports fans are famously passionate, so head all the way down Broad Street and catch a game while you’re in town. There’s nothing quite like baseball on a warm summer evening. This year, Philly is also hosting six matches featuring the world’s best soccer players—a can’t-miss addition to the semiquincentennial celebration.

Why Philly for the 250th?

Philadelphia effortlessly blends historical significance and modern vitality. You can stand where the nation was born in the morning, eat a pretzel on the street in the afternoon, and cheer with thousands of fans at night.

Have a phantastic Philly getaway! xx Lilly
